Therapeutic indications:

The drug is used in the case of:

  • uterine inflammatory diseases in cows including postpartum endometritis,
  • assisted parturition (abnormal parturition and parturition with complications)
  • surgical expulsion of afterbirth,
  • abortion,
  • after Сesarean birth.

Composition of the veterinary drug:

10 g of the drug (one pessary) contains:

  • 0.2 g of ceftiofur (in form of ceftiofur hydrochloride) as an active substance.

Pharmacological activity:

PENOCEFUR is an antibacterial drug. Ceftiofur, which is the active substance of the drug, is an antibiotic of the cephalosporin group with a broad spectrum of action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including strains producing β-lactamase, as well as some anaerobic strains: Escherichia coli, Actinobacillus spp, Salmonella spp. Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Actynomyces spp., Klebsiella spp., Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp. Bacillus spp., Proteus spp., Fusobacterium necrophorum, Bacteroides spp.

Ceftiofur inhibits the enzyme transpeptidase and suppresses the synthesis of mucopeptide (murein), peptidoglycan of the cell wall, that leads to the impaired growth of the microorganism’s cell wall and bacteria lysis.

In the uterine cavity, ceftiofur is rapidly metabolized to desfuroylceftiofur, which has bactericidal activity equivalent to ceftiofur.  This active metabolite reversibly binds to proteins and is accumulated in the infection site. Decreased activity of ceftiofur in the presence of necrotic tissues is not observed. Being administered intrauterinely, the systemic effect is almost absent.

Dosage:

Before the intrauterine administration of the drug, the external genital organs and the root of the tail are treated with an antiseptic. The drug is injected through the cervical canal of the uterus into the uterine cavity.

In the case of assisted parturition, abortion, cesarean section, as well as after surgical expulsion of afterbirth in cows, the drug is administered in the following doses: 1 pessary twice with an interval of 48 hours.

For the treatment of uterine inflammation, the drug is administered in the following doses: 1 tablet every 24 hours, repeat at least three times, until the affected cows completely recover (in the case of cervical dilatation), but no more than for 5 days.

Precautions and adverse reactions:

When the drug is used in recommended doses and in accordance with all the instructions, side effects and complications are generally not observed. In animals with increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug, allergic reactions may occur (shortness of breath, itching, swelling). In this case, the drug should be cancelled; and, if necessary, antihistamines and calcium medications should be prescribed.

Do not use in animals with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

No overdose symptoms have been revealed.

Do not use the drug simultaneously with tetracycline, macrolide, lincosamide antibiotics. Note that you may use PENOCEFUR simultaneously with other systemic drugs.

After the first administration and cancellation, no peculiarities of the drug use are revealed.

Avoid missing the next dose of the drug, as it may lead to the reduced therapeutic effect. If administration of the veterinary drug is missed, resume it in the same dosage and according to the same treatment scheme as soon as possible. Do not increase the dose to compensate the missing one.

Withdrawal period:

Animals should not be slaughtered for human consumption within 3 days after the last drug treatment. Meat of animals forcibly slaughtered earlier than the specified period expires may be used for feeding carnivores.

Milk may be used for human consumption without any restrictions after the last drug administration.

Storage conditions:

Store in a dark place at a temperature between + 2 ° C to + 25 ° C. The drug should be kept out of the reach of children.

Shelf-life:

Shelf-life of the veterinary drug under appropriate storage conditions is 1 years from the date of manufacture.
