Veterinary drug DOXYCYCLINE 500


The drug is used for the treatment of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in pigs and poultry.

Therapeutic indications:

The drug is used in calves, lambs, goats, pigs and poultry (broilers, breeding poultry, poultry of the parent flock, repair young chickens) for the treatment of respiratory, gastrointestinal and other infections of bacterial etiology, pathogens of which are sensitive to doxycycline.

Composition of the veterinary drug:

The 1 g of the drug contains:

  • 500 mg of doxycycline (in the form of doxycycline hyclate) as an active substance.

Pharmacological activity:

The active substance of the antibiotic from the tetracycline group is doxycycline. Doxycycline has a bacteriostatic effect on gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, some protozoa and mycoplasma, including Actinomyces spp., Clostridium spp., Listeria monocytogenesStaphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Ornithobacterium rhinotrachealeCorynebacterium spp., Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiaeCampylobacter spp., Haemophilus spp., Escherichia coli, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Bordetella spp.Brucella spp., Pasteurella spp., Salmonella spp. as well as mycoplasma, spirochetes, chlamydia and rickettsia.

Doxycycline inhibits the synthesis of proteins in a microbial cell at ribosomal level.

The veterinary drug administered orally is quickly and well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and penetrates into all animal organs and tissues, where it reaches maximum concentrations within 2-4 hours after administration and remains at the therapeutic level for 18-24 hours. Doxycycline is metabolized to an insignificant degree and is excreted from the body mainly with feces and urine.

Dosage:

The drug is administered orally for 3-5 days in the following doses:

  • calves, lambs, goatlings – Individually at a dose of 0.1 g (50 mg of doxycycline hyclate) of the drug per 10 kg of BW with drinking water, milk or milk replacer ;
  • pigs and poultry –  group method with drinking water (feed) at a dose of 100 g of the drug per 500-1000 liters of water or 500-1000 kg of feed per day (20-40 mg of the drug per kg of poultry body weight and 10-20 mg of the drug per kg of pig body weight).

The prepared working solution should be used within a day. Do not prepare drug solutions and mixtures in the amount exceeding the amount of daily consumption. MIlk-based drug solutions are stable for 4 hours.

Drug administration via pulse or continuous dose is also possible for 4-6 hours (using medicator in accordance with the instructions for its use). Animals and poultry should receive only water containing the drug during the treatment period (except pulsed medication).

Precautions and adverse reactions:

If used in accordance with the instructions, the drug usually does not cause side effects. In animals and poultry with increased individual sensitivity, allergic reactions may occur. In this case, the use of the drug is discontinued; antihistamines and symptomatic treatment are prescribed.

Do not use in cases of intensive ruminal digestion, severe liver and kidney dysfunction, as well as individual hypersensitivity to the drug's components.

In case of overdose of the veterinary drug, food refusal and gastrointestinal disfunction may be observed in animals and poultry. 

Do not use this drug simultaneously with penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics, and mineral supplements and along with considerable amounts of iron, magnesium, calcium and aluminum.

Аfter the first administration and cancellation no peculiarities are revealed.

Avoid missing the next dose of the drug, as it may lead to the reduced therapeutic effect. If administration of the veterinary drug is missed, resume it in the same dosage and according to the same treatment scheme as soon as possible. Do not increase the dose to compensate the missing one.

The drug should not be used in the second half of pregnancy and during lactation period.

Withdrawal period:

Do not use for poultry, which eggs are used for human consumption. 

Animals should not be slaughtered for human consumption within 20 days after the last treatment, poultry - within 5 days after the last treatment. Meat of animals forcibly slaughtered earlier than the specified period expires may be used for feeding carnivores.

Storage conditions:

Store in a dark place at a temperature between +2°C to +25°C. The drug should be kept out of the reach of children.

Shelf-life:

Shelf-life of the veterinary drug under appropriate storage conditions is 2 years from the date of manufacture, after the first opening of the package - 3 month. The shelf-life of the milk-based and water-based working solution is 4 hours and 24 hours, respectivly. Do not use after expiry date.
