Therapeutic indications:
The drug is used in cattle as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic agent for the treatment of inflammatory processes in the respiratory system, udder swelling, acute mastitis, inflammation of the skeletal muscles.
The drug is used in pigs as anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic agent for the treatment of metritis-mastitis-agalactia syndrome, inflammatory processes of the musculoskeletal system and respiratory diseases.
The drug is used in horses for the treatment of inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases (MSD) (arthritis, dislocation, sprain, pododermatitis, synovitis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, etc.), pain syndrome of different etiology (traumatic and postoperative pain, colic).
The drug is used in dogs and cats as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic agent during the postoperative period for the treatment of hyperthermia, mastitis and acute mastitis.
Composition of the veterinary drug:
1 ml of the preparation contains:
• 100 mg of ketoprofen
Pharmacological activity:
Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), a derivative of propionic acid. The drug has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects, inhibits platelet aggregation.
Ketoprofen is a strong analgesic agent, the mechanism of the drug action is based on the inhibition of enzymes of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways of arachidonic acid metabolism, which leads to the synthesis termination.
Ketoprofen is also a bradykinin inhibitor (a mediator of pain and inflammation). Ketoprofen stabilizes the lysosome membranes, preventing them from the enzymes release which contribute to the tissues destruction when inflammatory reactions occur.
Ketoprofen is well absorbed from the injection site and quickly distributed in the body, reaching its maximum concentration in plasma in 30 minutes. Over 98% of ketoprofen binds to plasma proteins and concentrates in the inflammation area. The drug is partially metabolized in the liver and is excreted mainly with urine.
Dosage:
• Cattle – the drug is administered intravenously or intramuscularly at a dose of 3 ml of the drug per 100 kg of body weight, which corresponds to 3 mg of ketoprofen per 1 kg of body weight, once a day for 1-3 days.
• Pigs – the drug is administered intramuscularly at a dose of 0.3 ml of the drug per 10 kg of body weight, which corresponds to 3 mg of ketoprofen per 1 kg of body weight, once a day for 1-3 days.
• Horses – the drug is administered intravenously at a dose of 1 ml of the drug per 45 kg of body weight, which corresponds to 2.22 mg of ketoprofen per 1 kg of body weight, once a day for 3-5 days. For the symptomatic treatment of colic, the drug is given as a single dose of 1 ml of the drug per 45 kg of body weight.
• Dogs and cats – the drug is administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously at a dose of 0.02-0.025 ml of the drug per 1 kg of body weight, which corresponds to 2-2.5 mg of ketoprofen per 1 kg of body weight, once a day for 1-5 days.
Precautions and adverse reactions:
After intramuscular injection, the animal may develop edema at the injection site, which disappears within 7 days.
Side effects such as gastrointestinal disorder may be observed in dogs. In this case, symptomatic therapy is prescribed.
Do not use in animals with hypersensitivity to ketoprofen, peptic ulcer, hemorrhagic syndrome, severe liver and kidney dysfunctions, during pregnancy, as well as in horse foals that are less than 15 days of age.
