Therapeutic indications:

Duocillin LA is used in cattle, pigs, sheep and goats for the treatment of arthritis, mastitis, gastrointestinal, respiratory and urogenital infections caused by microorganisms which are sensitive to benzylpenicillin.

Composition of the veterinary drug:

1 ml of the drug contains:

  • 150,000 IU of procaine benzylpenicillin,
  • 150,000 IU of benzylpenicillin benzathine.

Pharmacological activity:

Duocillin LA is a complex long-acting antibacterial drug.

The active substance of the drug contains: benzilpenicillin procaine and benzilpenicillin benzatine – antibiotics of β-lactam group, which has bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, such as Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (insidiosa), Listeria monocytogenes, Streptococcus spp. Also these antibiotics have a bacteriostatic effect on Staphylococcus spp., Leptospira spp., Treponema spp. and so on, which do not produce penicillinase.

The mechanism of action of the drug: procaine benzylpenicillin and benzathine benzylpenicillin inhibit the synthesis of the component of mucopeptide (acetylmuramic acid), required for building the bacterial cell wall. As a result, bacterial cells stop growing that leads to further bacterial lysis.

After intramuscular administration of the drug, a therapeutic concentration of active substances in the blood is reached in 1 - 2 hours, and due to slow resorption its therapeutic effect is maintained for 3 days.

Penicillins are excreted from the body in unchanged form mainly with urine.
