Antiseptics for the prevention of mastitis in dairy cows

  • Contains chlorhexidine at a concentration of 1%

  • The active substance remains stable on the skin

  • Highly effective against most gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms

Application:

The solution is used as an antiseptic agent for the treatment of the udder skin and teats of cows before and after milking in order to prevent mastitis.

Composition of the antiseptic agent:

The solution contains:

•          1% of chlorhexidine digluconate

Mechanism of action:

CHLOROBARRIER 1% is a ready-to-use solution with strong antimicrobial activity against most gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp. Also CHLOROBARRIER is effective against Chlamydia spp., Mycoplasma spp., Ureaplasma spp.

The mechanism of action: chlorhexidine binds to the negatively charged amino group of bacterial cellular proteins. This leads to the osmotic imbalance in bacterial cells and the loss of potassium and phosphorus. Osmotic pressure disruption in the microbial cell is the main mechanism which determines the bactericidal action of the drug.

Chlorhexidine is stable after the skin treatment, remaining on the skin surface in the amount sufficient to reveal the bactericidal effect.

The antiseptic does not have a local irritant and sensitizing effect, and is classified as low-hazard substance.

Use:

Immediately before milking, the udder skin and teats is treated with the antiseptic by dipping them in a cup with a ready-to-use solution for disinfection.  The antiseptic may be applied in form of spray or foam.

Leave the antiseptic agent for 30 seconds, then wipe it off with disposable napkins or an individual towel.

At the end of milking, remove the milking machine and immediately treat the udder skin and teats (the whole surface) with the antiseptic by dipping it in a cup with a ready-to-use solution for disinfection.  Also the antiseptic may be sprayed over the tits and udder. Do not wipe off. Let the antiseptic agent form the protective film on the surface of the udder skin and teats, before a cow leaves the milking parlour.

You can use any inert container suitable for dipping the teats. The cup should be washed and disinfected regularly, at least once a week, in a warm water.

If the cup with a ready-to-use solution become contaminated, the contents should be poured out, the cup filled with the antiseptic once again. The antiseptic should not be diluted with water or aqueous solutions.  Do not pour the residue into a canister with a clean product.
