Veterinary drug COLISTIN-P 12
Therapeutic indications:
The drug is used with therapeutic purpose to calves, lambs, pigs and poultry (broilers, breeding poultry, poultry of parental flock, repair young chickens, laying hens) in case of colibacillosis, salmonellosis and other infectious diseases of gastrointestinal tract of bacterial etiology, pathogens of which are sensitive to colistin.
Composition of the veterinary drug:
1 ml of the drug contains:
• 12 000 000 IU of colistin (equivalent to 500 mg of colistin sulfate)
Pharmacological activity:
Colistin is the active substance of the drug, an antibacterial agent of the polymyxin group (polypeptides).
Colistin has bactericidal activity against gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Pasteurella spp., Bordetella spp., Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and others.
The mechanism of action: colistin inhibits the permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane, that leads to its destruction and further lysis of the bacterial cell.
In the gastrointestinal tract of animals and poultry, colistin is not destroyed by enzymes and almost never gets absorbed into the blood, due to this, high concentration of colistin is reached. Colistin does not accumulate in organs and tissues; it is excreted from the body with faeces mainly unchanged form.
Dosage:
The drug is administered orally individually or in groups with drinking water or mixed with feed, during 3-5 days in the following doses:
Therapeutic solution should be prepared daily. During the period of drug administration the prepared solution should be the only source of drinking water for animals and poultry. In case when it is impossible, for example, when using pulse-dosing, the daily dose should be administered for at least 4 hours or divided into 2 equal parts and administered at 12 hours interval.
The preparation is thermostable, it does not lose its properties in the process of heat treatment for 15 min at a temperature of 100 °C.
Precautions and adverse reactions:
When used in accordance with the instruction, side effects and complications are generally not observed. In animals and poultry with increased individual sensitivity to components of the drug symptoms of an allergic reaction occur. In this case, the drug should be cancelled; antihistamines and other symptomatic treatment should be prescribed.
Do not use in animals and poultry with increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug, as well as with kidney and liver diseases. Do not use in animals with developed rumen digestion.
In case of drug overdose, gastrointestinal tract dysfunctions may be observed in animals and poultry.
Do not use this drug simultaneously with cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, macrolides, tetracyclines and myorelaxants.
After the first administration and cancellation, no peculiarities of the drug use are revealed.
Avoid missing the next dose of the drug, as it may lead to the reduced therapeutic effect. If administration of the veterinary drug is missed, resume it in the same dosage and according to the same treatment scheme as soon as possible. Do not increase the dose to compensate the missing one.
Use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation, as well as in newborn animals is possible under the prescription of a veterinarian, if the expected benefit exceeds the potential risk.
Withdrawal period:
No withdrawal period for poultry eggs.
Animals must not be slaughtered for human consumption before 7 days after the last drug administration, poultry - before 3 days. Meat of animals forcibly slaughtered before the specified period expires may be used for feeding carnivores.
Storage conditions:
Store in a dark place at a temperature between + 2 ° C to + 25 ° C.
The drug should be kept out of reach of children.
Shelf-life:
Shelf-life of the veterinary drug is 3 years from the date of manufacture. Shelf-life after the first opening of the bottle is 3 months under appropriate storage conditions. The prepared water solution should be used within 24 hours. Do not use the drug after expiry date.
