Doxycycline-O

Veterinary drug DOXYCYCLINE-O

The drug is used for the treatment of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in pigs and poultry.

  • A broad spectrum of action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria

  • Quickly absorbed

  • Penetrates into multiple organs and tissues

  • For oral use

Therapeutic indications:

The drug is used with therapeutic purpose in pigs and poultry (broilers, breeding poultry, poultry of parent stock, repair young chickens) to cure respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases of bacterial etiology (colibacillosis, pasteurellosis, salmonellosis, mycoplasmosis and others), the causative agents of which are sensitive to doxycycline.

Composition of the veterinary drug:

The 1 ml of the drug contains:

  • 100 mg of doxycycline (in the form of doxycycline hyclate) as an active substance.

Pharmacological activity:

The active substance of the antibiotic from the tetracycline group is doxycycline. Doxycycline has a bacteriostatic effect on gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, some protozoa and mycoplasma, including Escherichia coli, Haemophilus spp., Pasteurella spp., Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Clostridium spp., Chlamydia spp., Listeria monocytogenes and other doxycycline-sensitive microorganisms.

Doxycycline inhibits the synthesis of proteins in a microbial cell, damaging formation of mRNA-ribosome complex between aminoacyl-tRNA (transfer RNA) and 30s ribosomal subunit.

Once administered, the veterinary drug is quickly and fully absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and penetrates into all animal organs and tissues.

The maximum concentration of doxycycline in blood is reached in 2-4 hours  after administration of the drug; it’s therapeutic effect is maintained for 18-24 hours. Doxycycline is metabolized to an insignificant degree and is excreted from the body mainly with feces and urine.

Dosage:

The drug is administered orally with drinking water individually or in groups in the following doses:

  • poultry – at a dose of 0.5-1 ml of the drug per 1 liter of drinking water (which corresponds to 50-100 mg of doxycycline per 1 liter of water or 1-2 ml of the drug per 10 kg of bird's body weight) during 3-5 days;
  • pigs – at a dose of 1 ml of the drug per 10 kg of animal body weight (which corresponds to 10 mg of doxycycline per 1 kg of animal body weight or 0.5-1 liter of the drug per 1 ton of water) during 5 days.

Aqueous solution of the drug is prepared daily in the volume calculated for consumption during the day.

Animals and poultry should receive only water containing the drug during the treatment period.

Precautions and adverse reactions:

In order to avoid the formation of microorganisms’ resistant strains do not exceed the prescribed period of administration of the drug.

When the drug is used in accordance with all these instructions, side effects are generally not observed. Allergic reactions may occur in animals and poultry with increased individual sensitivity to the drug components. In this case, the drug should be cancelled; antihistamines and symptomatic drugs should be prescribed.

Do not use in animals and poultry with hypersensitivity to drug components, as well as with severe liver and kidney dysfunctions.

In case of overdose of the veterinary drug, food refusal and apathy may be observed in animals and poultry. In this case, the drug treatment should be canceled and, if necessary, symptomatic therapy should be conducted.

Do not use this drug simultaneously with penicillin and cephalosporin groups, antacids, kaolin, mineral supplements and preparations containing iron, magnesium, calcium and aluminum.

After the first administration and cancellation, no peculiarities of the drug use have been revealed.

Avoid missing the next dose of the drug, as it may lead to the reduced therapeutic effect. If administration of the veterinary drug is missed, resume it in the same dosage and according to the same treatment scheme as soon as possible. Do not increase the dose to compensate the missing one.

Do not use the drug during pregnancy and lactation.

The drag cannot be used in poultry, whose eggs are used for human food, as well as in young hens less than 20 days before the start of laying eggs.

Withdrawal period:

Animals should not be slaughtered for human consumption within 20 days after the last treatment. Meat of animals forcibly slaughtered earlier than the specified period expires may be used for feeding carnivores.

Storage conditions:

Store in a dark place at a temperature between +2°C to +25°C. The drug should be kept out of the reach of children.

Shelf-life:

Shelf-life of the veterinary drug under appropriate storage conditions is 2 years from the date of manufacture, after the first opening of the bottle (vial) - 28 days. The shelf-life of the working solution is 24 hours.
